I\u2019ve been writing about aeroplanes since I was a boy.\u00a0 Aged eight, I wrote a school project called\u00a0Jet\u2019s.\u00a0 And while I now understand how to use an apostrophe, my interest in things with wings has remained undimmed.<\/p>\n

My first book,\u00a0Vulcan 607<\/em><\/strong>, was published by Bantam Press in 2006.\u00a0 It was followed in 2009 by two more British military hitory titles:\u00a0Phoenix Squadron<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and, in 2010,\u00a0Storm Front<\/em><\/strong>, about the Dhofar War in Oman in the early seventies.\u00a0\u00a0 Into the Black<\/em>, about the first flight of the Space Shuttle\u00a0Columbia\u00a0<\/em>followed, before I returned to the Falklands War again with Harrier 809<\/em>, a celebration of Britain\u2019s legendary jump jet and it\u2019s critical contribution to victory in the South Atlantic.\u00a0 All were Sunday\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0top-ten bestsellers. \u00a0The latest book, Mosquito<\/em>, has been my first foray into the Second World War, but I don’t think will be my last …<\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

My writing has appeared British national newspapers including the\u00a0Guardian, Daily Mail<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Sun, Esquire<\/em>\u00a0magazine, and a wide range of aviation magazines including\u00a0Aeroplane Monthly,\u00a0Fly Past<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Aircraft Illustrated<\/em>.\u00a0 A documentary based on\u00a0Vulcan 607\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>called\u00a0Falklands\u2019 Most Daring Raid<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Darlow Smithson (Touching the Void<\/em>, 127 Hours<\/em>) was shown on Channel 4 in March 2012.<\/p>\n

Beyond my own writing, books still dominate.\u00a0 I\u2019ve worked in publishing for fifteen years and I\u2019m currently Publishing Director at Penguin\u2019s Michael Joseph imprint. \u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve been lucky enough to publish a diverse range of authors including Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, Gregg Hurwitz, Andy McNab, Emily Maitlis, Jeremy Clarkson, Ellen MacArthur, Roy Keane, Viv Richards and Brian Johnson, the lead singer from AC\/DC.\u00a0 More aviation or military flavoured titles I\u2019ve published\u00a0Tornado Down,\u00a0Sniper One,\u00a0Sabre Squadron,\u00a0Joint Force Harrier,\u00a0Immediate Response<\/em>, Major Mark Hammond\u2019s account of his time flying Chinooks in Afghanistan, Mark Owen\u2019s bestselling account of the Navy SEAL Bin Laden raid,\u00a0No Easy Day<\/em> and, more recently, Mike Sutton’s Typhoon<\/em>, Paul Tremelling’s Harrier: How to be a Fighter Pilot<\/em>, and former Concorde chief pilot Mike Bannister’s memoir, Concorde<\/em>.\u00a0 I was also privileged to be the first person at Penguin to read Geoffrey Wellum\u2019s classic Battle of Britain memoir\u00a0First Light<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I was born and brought up in Cambridge, and studied Modern History at the University of Liverpool.\u00a0 I now live with my family in a village near Cambridge that is satisfyingly close to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford.\u00a0 And so Spitfires, Hurricanes and Mustangs are regular visitors to the skies overhead.\u00a0 I always run outside and have a look.<\/p>\n
