{"id":563,"date":"2012-05-14T09:45:08","date_gmt":"2012-05-14T09:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rowlandwhite.com\/?p=563"},"modified":"2024-01-10T09:17:37","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T09:17:37","slug":"researching-vulcan-607","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rowlandwhite.com\/?p=563","title":{"rendered":"A flight from Brize Norton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the real privileges made possible by writing is the chance, every so often, to enjoy money-can\u2019t-buy experiences.\u00a0 In August 2004, while I was researching <em>Vulcan 607<\/em>, just three days before returning to Brize Norton to fly out to the Falklands, I was lucky enough to fly on board a 101 Squadron VC10 during an air-to-air refuelling sortie out over the North Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The memory of taxiing out onto the runway while sitting in the flight deck jumpseat is still vivid.\u00a0 There was something surprisingly stirring about making the turn on to the runway from a position so far ahead of the nosewheel.\u00a0 A great feeling of restrained, potential power, I think.; anticipation of what was to come when the co-pilot pushed forward the four throttles and gave the Conway engines their head.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, here are a couple of the pictures from the flight aboard TARTAN 41.\u00a0 The\u00a0 F3s (callsign TARRAGON) were from 43 Squadron Jaguars (callsign BOXER or TURBO) from 6 Squadron and the GR4s from 9 Squadron (callsign BATMAN).\u00a0 The geekiest amongst you will notice that they\u2019ve borrowed a 2 (AC) Squadron jet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/user39678.vs.easily.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"blogpic2\" src=\"http:\/\/user39678.vs.easily.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"456\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/user39678.vs.easily.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-567\" title=\"blogpic\" src=\"http:\/\/user39678.vs.easily.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rowlandwhite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.rowlandwhite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rowlandwhite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic-148x102.jpg 148w, https:\/\/www.rowlandwhite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic-31x21.jpg 31w, https:\/\/www.rowlandwhite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic-38x26.jpg 38w, https:\/\/www.rowlandwhite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blogpic-309x215.jpg 309w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking at the photographs now,\u00a0 the most striking thing is that of the three RAF types I saw from the windows of that fabulous old British airliner, the Jaguar, Tornado F3 and Tornado GR4, two have now been retired.\u00a0\u00a0 I took pictures of them all.
